Franciscan Apple Chop Plate 12 1/2″ Large Round Red Green Brown Vintage Franciscan Apple Chop Plate 12 1/2″ Large Round Red Green Brown Vintage Exquisite Decorative FRANCISCAN LARGE CHOP PLATE 12 1/2″ Diameter , HAND PAINTED Apple w/RED, GREEN & BROWN on CREAM DESCRIPTION: This is the classic Apple pattern that has graced American dinner tables since 1940 and became one of the most popular dinnerware patterns in the USA. The hand painted red apples with green leaves & brown stems are so beautiful and the perfect size to serve a large ham or turkey for that special occasion. CONDITION: The condition of this Franciscan chop plate is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, scratches, rubbings or hairlines. Since this is used, there are a couple of very minor knife marks as would be expected with a vintage item. These are really not visible unless the chop plate is turned in a bright light. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is. DIMENSIONS: The very large chop plate has a height of 1 1/16″ and a diameter of 12 1/2″. HISTORY/MARKS: Franciscan Ceramics had its beginning in 1875 as Gladding, McBean & Co. in Lincoln, California with a partnership formed by Charles Gladding and others. After the economic collapse of 1929, the company began to manufacture earthenware dinnerware and art pottery to boost its revenues. For their hand painted pottery, Franciscan Apple was introduced in 1940 and Desert Rose in 1941 which became one of their best selling lines. After many mergers and acquisitions, Wedgwood owned the Franciscan Ceramics division in 1979. In 1984, Wedgwood closed the Franciscan Ceramics division. Production of the Franciscan patterns Desert Rose, Apple, and Fresh Fruit was moved to the Johnson Brothers Division of Wedgwood in England, discontinuing all other dinnerware and tile lines. Archival examples of the Franciscan ware were packed up and given to the Wedgwood Museum. This item was produced in the USA by the Gladding, McBean & Co. of Lincoln, California.
